Mobility, Memory, and Riding the #59 Bus in Buenos Aires
The #59 bus is one of Buenos Aires, Argentina’s oldest bus lines. Since 1928, its chauffeurs have whisked passengers along a transect of the city that begins in the Barracas neighborhood, and ends in the suburb of Vicente López. Since my earliest memories of traveling to Argentina, the city’s colectivos loomed large on the hyper-busy urban landscape. In terms of vantage points while crossing the city, the view from the window of one of these buses is unparalleled. I’m currently collecting historical and contemporary materials and contacts related to the 59 as part of a multimedia creative project launched in 2023.
