I’m currently at work on my book project: American Venom: Animals, Science, & the Hemisphere. Since 2019 I have been conducting research in a variety of archives and field sites related to the venomous animals and antivenom medicines. I draw on critical archival methods, conduct oral histories, and work to center “beyond human” subjects (animals and environments) in a novel account of inter-American relations over the course of the last century.

These open access articles both relate to some of the key geographies and themes from my broader book project:
Balloffet, L. Environment, Tropical Disease, and Scientific Networks in Argentina: Folclore and Multiscalar Mobilities. Journal of the History of Biology (2025).
Balloffet, L. “Venomous Company: Snakes and Agribusiness in Honduras.” Environment & Society Portal, Arcadia (Spring 2020), no. 19. Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society.
